frog environmental Silt Wattles have stood the test of time on a Team Van Oord (TVO) construction site, (Mackley, lead contractor) delivering innovation on the Water & Environment Management (WEM) EA framework contract.

The wattles were used to help control sediment discharged from a large excavation that had to be regularly pumped throughout the winter stoppage period.

The Silt Wattles were placed in an array to contain muddy water pumped from the excavation and replaced straw bales that had previously been used for this purpose.

The Silt Wattles experienced no breakdown or degradation when compared to straw bales that degraded more rapidly and did not provide effective silt control over time. This reduced maintenance and resource demand in the winter months with the site shut down.

The design of Silt Wattles means that they are malleable and will fit to the contour of uneven surfaces, where they can be staked in place or tied off.

frog environmental manufacture and supply 3 different diameters of Silt Wattles; 200 mm, 300 mm and 450 mm. All are manufactured in the UK in lengths of up to 2 metres.

Silt Wattles can be placed in treatment channels where they help to slow flow and trap sediment; they can also be deployed in ditches & streams. The wattles provide a versatile way of controlling the flow of muddy water from construction sites.

frog environmental has provided silt control training to TVO as part of wider efforts to prevent silt pollution and maintain and improve environmental performance.
