Case Study
Constructing the country’s largest fish pass
Construction, Infrastructure & DevelopmentClient
Jackson Civils / Environment Agency
Location
River Trent, Nottingham
Objective
£12m construction of England’s largest fish pass
Challenge
Containing pollutants whilst working near and in water
The challenge
Jackson Civils has successfully completed construction of the country’s largest fish pass on the River Trent in Nottingham.
Delivered on behalf of the Environment Agency, the £12m scheme involved the construction of a 200m long, 6m deep and 6.5m wide fish pass, enabling a wide range of species such as salmon, trout and eel to safely bypass the Holme Sluices structure and access spawning and feeding grounds further upstream.
Holme Sluices is a key component of Nottingham’s flood risk management infrastructure, originally constructed in the 1950s as part of an extensive flood defence programme. The structure crosses the River Trent and plays a vital role in controlling water levels on either side of the sluices to reduce flood risk in the city. However, the difference in water levels upstream and downstream has historically created a barrier to fish movement, preventing many species from travelling freely along the river.
The Colwick Fish Pass is divided into 20 ascending chambers into which water flows through narrow slots. Fish of all species swimming upstream to lay their eggs in the gravel riverbeds of the Trent tributaries such as the River Dove and the River Derwent will be able to pass through these slots and rest in the chamber above before continuing.
We supported the project by specifying and supplying a Bubble Curtain, which formed part of the site’s environmental protection measures during the build.
The solution
We designed and built a 75m long Bubble Curtain which was used at various stages throughout the dredging phase to help minimise silt disturbance and protect fish while works were carried out in and near the River Trent.
Recognised by environmental regulators, a Bubble Curtain supports the protection of the surrounding aquatic environment throughout construction by reducing the movement of silt, dampening underwater sound and vibration caused by activity such as piling works, deflecting fish from works and aerating the entire water column.
The Bubble Curtain was installed by RED7 marine operatives, using a small boat to assist with routing and accurate positioning of the tubing within the river.
Versatile design
We supply different sized tubing to suit project specific needs. In this case, we specified a 3/4 inch single line of Bubble Tubing®.
Dual purpose
Bubble Curtains & Barriers have wide application ranging from underwater noise control to silt management, abstraction protection, inlet protection, litter and weed prevention and emergency aeration. They can be scaled to suit the length of the works being undertaken.
Award-winning technology
We’ve won numerous awards for the phenomenal results achieved when using Bubble Curtains on construction sites across the UK.
The results
Exemplary aeration
Aeration oxygenates the water which helps aquatic life during construction.
Environment protected
Using a Bubble Curtain during the works helped reduce harm and stress to fish and other aquatic life throughout the two year build.
Low carbon design
Our Bubble Curtains work with small compressors – reducing energy and associated carbon costs.
Regulatory compliance
Bubble Curtains help meet (and exceed!) environmental regulatory requirements.
Award-winning project
‘UK’s largest fish pass boosts biodiversity in the River Trent’ won a national award at the 2025 Green Apple Awards.
