Construction Site Water Management

Silt Capture Channel

Silt Capture Channels are used to slow the flow of dirty water, to filter and trap silt and fine sediment and polish the water as it passes through the treatment channel.

Silt Capture Channel on construction site

Formed on an impermeable membrane and made up of a combination of Floc Mat®, Silt Mats™ and Silt Wattles, this natural water treatment system helps clean the water and prevents the risk of polluting nearby watercourses and causing harm to aquatic life.

Depending on the available space, topography and pumping rate, the Silt Capture Channel can be formed in different configurations to suit the constraints of the construction site. Configurable for above-ground installation on an impermeable liner, or dug in where site constraints favour a shallow, lined channel, they are simple to install, easy to monitor, and deliver highly effective, low-cost treatment of clays and fines for construction sites.  Our technical team can help advise you on the best set up for your site.

A Silt Capture Channel can be used passively as a standalone treatment option to treat water or in combination with our Pipe Reactor  pumped system.

Compared with tank-based or hard-barrier systems, Silt Capture Channels offer lower whole-life cost and carbon, including gravity-fed, zero-carbon operation where site gradients allow.

It is commonly used for:

  • Drainage from construction sites
  • Polishing water
  • Artificial dispersion fields
  • Quarrying operations

Gravity fed silt capture channel
Key Benefits

Silt Capture Channels form part of our Rain Ready®, low carbon, high performance approach to silt control on construction sites

Reliable & affordable pollution prevention

Captures and binds silt, cleaning muddy construction site water. Gravity-fed options provide zero-carbon operation.

Scalable design

The channel can be made in any shape and size to suit your site, and a second channel can be built to handle higher volumes of silty water.

Simple to install and reconfigure

Above-ground or dug-in layouts available to suit space, gradient and access.

Easy to monitor and maintain

Consumables are quick to replace; channels can be isolated for refurbishment without stopping treatment.

Scalable flow management

One standard channel handles up to 900 L/min; two in tandem treat up to 1,800 L/min.

Rapid response & delivery

We provide rapid response times and zero carbon deliveries.

Technical specification of our Silt Capture Channel:

Configuration Formed on an impermeable liner using a combination of Floc Mat®, Silt Mats™ and Silt Wattles to slow flow, filter and trap silt/fines. Channels can be above-ground or set into shallow, lined formations where suitable.
Treatment rate Standard Silt Capture Channels treat up to 900 l/min; two in tandem treat up to 1,800 l/min. Operate both for peak flows or take one offline to refurbish while maintaining treatment.
Application Standalone polishing of site water, or use downstream of the Pipe Reactor for enhanced removal of fine clay-associated particles.
Materials & capacity Made up of natural-fibre, biodegradable media; each mat typically holds 40–50 kg of captured sediment.
Carbon & energy Can be gravity-fed for zero-carbon operation; also compatible with pumped systems when used with a Pipe Reactor.
Maintenance Typical channel refurbishment is around three to four times per year (site-dependent). Size and location can be adjusted as works evolve.
End-of-use Used mats can be reused onsite to stabilise bare ground and to support newly planted trees and hedgerows (subject to waste-regulatory controls).

It’s good to see Frog getting involved with GT at the earliest stages of the project to help with planning out water management in advance of needing it.

“Frog Environmental were knowledgeable, helping to establish a workable, cost-effective and low maintenance solution for site approved by the regulator. They really understood the water management issues we had on site and worked with us to develop a solution which works, as well as engaging with our operatives to ensure that they could effectively manage the system.

We are delighted to have found a solution that prevents pollution and protects the environment, and ultimately allows us to continue with construction.”

The surface water system drainage feature utilised innovative solutions from Frog Environmental.

A rain-ready strategy was implemented, which enabled the development of a robust management system capable of effectively managing fluctuations in weather conditions year-round.

This provided a timely, sustainable and cost saving solution for our client.

They (Frog Environmental) were efficient in providing advice and the most appropriate product for our project. The team responded promptly to ensure the Bubble Curtain was delivered to the site on schedule.

It has worked well and has been great on site. We are demobilising this week, and the bubble curtain is already in store at our next site for reuse!

The Kex Gill road realignment scheme is a challenging project with multiple environmental risks including management of silt and water quality of the surrounding environment given the locality of designated sites.

Frog Environmental are providing us with extensive technical support, including the design, supply and install of their silt control products on site to ensure the project minimises risks to the watercourses in the project vicinity and prevents impact on highly sensitive aquatic species.

It’s great to be working with them and we’re delighted with the success of the whole project.
