Silt Pollution Risk Test
Settlement Tests
Settlement testing is an important technique used to identify the risk of a site to silt pollution and to determine the best course of treatment. Each test is site-specific and evaluates how quickly suspended solids separate from water.

Settlement Testing helps define a site’s silt pollution risk profile and informs the control measures required during temporary works.
Where appropriate, testing also includes Clearflow Gel Flocculant™ validation so that secondary treatment options can be considered with confidence.
We carry out Settlement Tests from our laboratory to help you plan ahead, reduce uncertainty and support regulatory engagement. We provide a report and a telephone consultation to discuss the findings.
These tests and reports are recommended at any stage of project to help define a successful intervention strategy. We recommend this test is carried out on all sites.
Settlement Tests are commonly used for:
- early risk assessment preparation during pre-construction planning and greenfield feasibility studies
- selecting proportionate silt control measures for active works based on test findings
- evaluating Clearflow Gel Flocculant™ options before site deployment
- supporting method statements, permits and discharge consent arrangements
- troubleshooting where water clarity issues are already present
Key Benefits
Our Settlement Tests bring clarity and certainty to your project:
Evidence-led decision making
Use accurate data to guide design and procurement to prevent water quality risks
Better compliance
Settlement Testing supports permits and regulatory standards
Practical outputs
We provide a concise report and consultation covering site-specific recommendations as part of our service
Flexible sampling
We will provide clear instructions on how to provide us with water and soil samples. We take samples from any site including pre-construction and live sites.
Better cost management
Working with the findings from a Settlement Test gets to the crux of water treatment requirements quicker and allows for a planned, cost-effective approach.
Rapid response
We offer a quick turnaround on our testing, reporting and consultation – a maximum of 10 working days from receiving the water or soil samples.
How to proceed with a Settlement Test:
In order to carry out Settlement Tests for a site we require samples and a completed Chain of Custody form (see our resources & videos tab). Please contact us for full specification of the types of samples we require, and other useful information about placing your order.
A Settlement Test must be carried out ahead of placing an order for Clearflow Gel Flocculant™ to assess a site’s soil structure and chemistry and help us advise you of the most suitable type of flocculant to receive optimal results.
