Citizen Crane is the collective name for several different Citizen Science projects on the River Crane, in West London. frog environmental has been providing technical and logistical support to the project for almost 3 years
The project started with water quality sampling and kick sampling for invertebrates using the RMI methodology and has grown to encompass habitat surveys, an outfall survey covering the entire catchment and real time water quality data analysis.
Friends of the River Crane Environment (FORCE) and the Zoological Society for London (ZSL) along with frog environmental form the core project management group for Citizen Crane. Crane Valley Partnership, The Environment Agency and Thames Water join us on a tight knit Citizen Crane Steering Group that meets quarterly.
Following the analysis of 2 complete years of data, a report has been produced updating stakeholders and all interested parties on progress to date. The report is available via the Crane Valley Partnership website.
The report breaks down and analyses the various components of this innovative river restoration project, its successes so far and the challenges we face in the future.
A central theme of the project has always focused on collecting reliable data that can be actively used to inform decisions at the catchment level. This has been borne out with both The Environment Agency and Thames Water using Citizen Crane data for modelling purposes and asset management.
frog environmental is proud to continue supporting this ground-breaking Citizen Science project. The promotion of Citizen Science in our river corridors is a great way to empower and engage local communities and to help restore and realise the true value of our rivers.
