Innovation finalists of CN Specialists Awards 2023

We continue to make waves with our revolutionary bubble curtain technology which was shortlisted for a national innovation award earlier this month.

Frog Environmental joined the team at John F Hunt Regeneration for the CN Specialists Awards ceremony in London.

Since inception 19 years ago the awards take place every September and bring the industry together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of specialist contractors and inspirational work found across the UK.

Finalists of Innovation of the Year (Contractor)

‘Innovative use of a bubble curtain to protect North Atlantic Salmon and reduce operational downtime’ was one of eight entries shortlisted nationally by the judges.

John F Hunt Regeneration partnered with us last year to deliver the UK’s first acoustic sound barrier as part of the £20m redevelopment works at South Shields in Holborn.

Using Bubble Tubing® technology, our bubble curtain achieved a 99% reduction in underwater noise which protected migrating salmon. This was the first of two phases of piling works due to take place over the two year redevelopment along the River Tyne.

Without the technology it is estimated that the Marine Management Organisation’s (MMO) restrictions may have limited piling operations by around 90 hours at an estimated cost of £110,000 over the length of the project.

European Commercial Marine Award Winners for Innovative Technology

Earlier this year we won Best Underwater Technology at Seawork’s Innovation Showcase within the 2023 European Commercial Marine Awards (ECMA) for the bubble curtain technology.

The Secret Behind Bubble Curtains

Bubble Curtains can be used as permanent or temporary solutions for marine and freshwater projects.

They have wide application ranging from underwater noise pollution to silt control, abstraction protection, inlet protection, litter and weed prevention and emergency aeration, and can be designed to suit the scale of the project.

The Bubble Tubing® technology is used to create a vertical wall of air bubbles from the water body floor to surface. A small compressor pushes air along the cleverly designed perforated pipe which releases a consistent stream of fine bubbles through the entire water column.

The compressor size and output is determined by water depth, current, length and diameter of the tube, alongside the optimal airflow for optimum efficiency.
