In the news: Preventing Pollution: Using innovative silt capture at Lowdham Flood Storage Reservoir

The Innovation Magazine, a CIWEM published publication covering environmental best practice, featured our innovative Silt Capture Channel and how it’s being used during the build of a £30 million Flood Storage Reservoir.

Working with Jackson Civil Engineering and the Environment Agency, the recent project at Lowdham demonstrates how simple, site-specific solutions can have a big impact – reducing risk to nearby watercourses while supporting compliance with planning and environmental permits.

The article highlights the project team’s innovative use of our Silt Capture Channels as a natural water treatment system – cleaning surface water and reducing the risk of pollution.

We design environmentally-friendly, biodegradable solutions to tackle common challenges on construction sites. By installing our Silt Capture Channel, the site team effectively managed surface water runoff without costly infrastructure or disruption.

This is what practical environmental protection looks like:

  • Easy-to-use solutions
  • Tailored site advice
  • Real-world results
  • Rain Ready™ systems in place, waiting for the rain.

Preventing Pollution with Innovative Silt Capture – Innovation Magazine’s feature

Preparation is key: Silt pollution is a risk year-round

Good surface water management during construction is essential in preventing sediment pollution and minimising risk of prosecution, with the potential for large financial penalties and reputational damage.

Planning silt control interventions is relatively quick and painless. We offer a range of cost effective, low carbon solutions to help prevent risks on site:

  • Silt Capture Channel – using a combination of our products, we’ve designed a silt capture device that treats between 900 -1800 litres per minute.
  • Silt Mat™ – captures sediment and prevents resuspension
  • Silt Wattle – reduces flow on sloping ground and in channels & ditches
  • Floc Mat® – traps sediment and cleans muddy water using a non-hazardous flocculant
  • Silt Net – for placement in lagoons to aid sediment deposition
  • Treated Geo-Jute – for polishing water and lining channels
  • Gel Flocculant – a low maintenance and non-toxic flocculant used to support silt and water separation to clean muddy water
  • Pipe Reactor – mobile water treatment unit
  • Bubble Curtains / Bubble Barriers – highly effective at aerating the entire water column and reducing movement of silt in water.

We also offer free training on the risks of silt on a construction site and you can download our Silt Control Toolbox Talk to communicate key points to your team.
